It’s always an incredible sensory journey, being thrown into a new and undiscovered environment. Everything around me was amplified: the colors, the sounds, the feel of things. During my summer in Italy I kept this mind, analyzing everything from the shapes of cobblestones to the curves of Renaissance statues to the smell of the old man selling gelato to the sound of the waves crashing onto the coastal beaches. The dilemma that presented itself, however, was how to keep these memories as vivid and bold as they were when I experienced them. I close my eyes and can still see, hear, and even smell so many things, but it’s as if they are glazed over with a slight fog that is my “real” life here in America. How does one fully capture a moment in time and all its sensational components? How do you make it tactile and perceptible in order to share it with others? My hope is to translate my memories into a tangible experience for the viewer, as well as myself.
