The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children will be on view at Work Commons in the Art & Architecture Building from June 15 — August 27, 2017.

In 1991, Newsweek hailed the preschools and infant-toddler centers of the municipality of Reggio Emilia, Italy as among the best in the world. International acclaim and interest followed, and The Hundred Languages of Children exhibition was created to inform the world about the work of the children and teachers of Reggio Emilia. Today this exhibit travels across the world and it continues to be acclaimed as an excellent educational approach for young children, both in Italy and across the world. The exhibit has travelled to 31 countries, including 40 cities in the United States. In each location, the exhibit has contributed to an increased understanding of the transformative power of early childhood education for all children.

This exhibit provides valuable evidence about the difference a rich, child-centered early learning environment can make in the lives of children. Such evidence is critical as we engage in a national debate around standards, testing and what kinds of educational programs best serve our children. The exhibition will help communities, educators, policy makers and families understand the enormous potential of early learning experiences as well as the lasting impact of effective early childhood and elementary education programs.

Hosted in conjunction with the university’s bicentennial year celebration of U‑M’s core values of intellectual leadership and innovation, public service, academic freedom and integrity, diversity and commitment to the combined mission of education, research and service, The Wonder of Learning exhibit is a catalyst for far-reaching change in how societies value early learning as a tool for making the world a better place.

This exhibit is cosponsored by the University of Michigan Children’s Centers and the University of Michigan Dearborn Early Childhood Education Center in partnership with the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and the James and Anne Duderstadt Center.
