555 Gallery: Alchemy - Science & Art Closing Reception
Every month, the 555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios participates in the city-wide Third Thursdays Art Hop, staying open late to allow more opportunities to take part in the gallery exhibits.
This month will be the Closing reception for the Alchemy: Science & Art exhibit. Paula Schubatis, a 2013 BFA graduate from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design, playfully examines the intersection of science, nature and art through her large-scale painting and fiber works. A selection from her newest oil painting series, “Forging A Vernacular Identity”, is shown for the first time alongside their woven textile counterparts. The exhibition also features projections of new digital imagery by 555 artist Hugo Navarro and projected electron microscopy photographs by Lauren Tanabe, Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Molecular Signaling from Columbia University and currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Wayne State.
Stamps School alumni J. Monte Martinez (MFA ‘02) and Carl W. Goines (BFA ‘02) founded 555 Nonprofit Gallery and Studios in Detroit with the help of several other alumni. Martinez serves as the creative director and Goines as the executive director.
