Erinn Heilman: 2021 NYSCA/NYFA Painting Fellow
Stamps alumna and Brooklyn-based painter and sculptor Erinn Heilman (BFA ‘17) has been named an NYSCA/NYFA (New York State Council on the Arts/New York Foundation for the Arts) Artist Fellow in Painting for the 2021 season. The fellowship program provides “unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to artists working in 15 disciplines, recognizing five disciplines per year on a triennial basis.” Heilman is joined by 26 other painting fellows which make up a total of 107 artists in various disciplines recognized for their contributions to the world of contemporary art in New York State.
Heilman’s work is informed by her career as a scenic artist in television and film (working on such projects as The Amazing Spider-man 2), allowing her to develop her craft. As she writes on her website’s “about” page, she often works with materials such as wax and water to bring out “internal translucency and opacity” in her sculptures, which are then “interpreted through [observational] paintings.”
