Andrew Millner: Rose Parade Exhibition in Boston
Andrew Millner‘s (BFA 1989) exhibit, Rose Parade, through June 9th at the Miller Yezerski Gallery in Boston. The opening reception is Friday, May 1 from 6 — 8 pm. The Miller Yezerski Gallery is located at 460 Harrison Ave, Boston, MA 02118.
Andrew Millner’s current exhibition Rose Parade explores a familiar theme, the still life floral bouquet, with the purpose of memorializing the rose and the rose pattern through the physicality of paint and the subtleness of drawing. Although, this theme has a traditional bent, Millner ‘s approach to his subject matter is highly innovative yet refined and respectful. Millner’s paintings have a nod to the density and display of the Rose Bowl Parade floats, pattern upon pattern, rose upon rose. Too lush and excessive to be part of the everyday landscape, yet memorable for its obsessive construction. Millner, utilizes drawing as his underpainting, thus laying down the rose pattern much like the masters designed a tapestry or carpet, nothing is obscured or overpainted, every rose has its appropriate placement and voice. The overall impact is dazzling and lush, yet tightly knit and finite.
Millner also continues to explore digital drawings, the very root of Millner’s exploration of the ubiquitous rose. Red, on Red, on Red…..a solemn yet sensual representation of the rose bouquet. Hand drawing each petal, each leaf and each stem, these works are developed on the computer and refined in terms of line quality and scale. The final image is captured and developed as a light jet print: a true hybrid of drawing and photography
Andrew Millner has had numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States. His work is held in prestigious private and public collections, including those of the Saint Louis Art Museum and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
