Audrey Bennett curates visual narrative to accompany U-M recital
On October 5, David Zerkel, Professor of Tuba and Euphonium in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, will be playing an unaccompanied piece by Pete Meechan, called “…a night devoid of stars” at the Stamps Recital Hall at 8 PM. It is a programmatic piece that is in reference to an essay written by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the impact and consequences of violence in society.
Accompanying this performance will be visual media curated by Audrey G. Bennett, University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and Professor of Art and Design in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. Together, in three movements, they tell a compelling story that begins with an excerpt from Dr. King’s essay titled “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”
The multimodal story then moves from slavery in 19th century America to the Civil Rights Era of the mid-20th century and finally to the present-day anti-Black racist movement. The story ends with an image of a night devoid of stars.
