Brett Grill: Sculpture Unveiled at the University of Kentucky
A sculpture created by Brett Grill (BFA 2001) honoring the first black football players at the University of Kentucky was unveiled on September 22, 2016. These bronze statues of Nate Northington, Greg Page, Wilbur Hackett, and Houston Hogg honor the men who shattered the UK racial barrier in 1967. A large crowd gathered for the unveiling ceremony, including many current Kentucky football players.
Brett graduated from Stamps with a BFA in sculpture in 2001. In addition to this statue and many others, Brett sculpted the Bo Schembechler statue on the University of Michigan campus. His work has been exhibited at various galleries and museums across the nation. He produces portraits and monuments that draw on the rich traditions of figurative sculpture. His sculptures crystallize all the important aspects of a life in one moment so that the final form dignifies the subject.
