Ellen Wetmore: Garden of Earthly Delights
Garden of Earthly Delights, a new solo exhibition at 3S Gallery in Portsmouth, NH features 50 recent drawings by Ellen Wetmore (BFA 1994).
Wetmore’s drawings on hand marbled paper confound single point perspective, our western art tradition’s omniscient eye. Threading together a narrative of uncanny landscapes, based on direct observation of the world around her, Wetmore’s drawings blend mundane observations from life with cartoony shadows that emerge on the page as a by-product of our shared culture and of the marbling patterns that primes the pages of her drawings. Wetmore credits her time with the U‑M department of art history for the far ranging visual source imagery that plays across these works. Wetmore’s main BFA mentors were Professors Lou Marinaro, Pat Simons, and Hiroko and Gene Pijanowski.
