Emilia Yang selected Arts for Gender Equality Fellow by CARE and Rockefeller Foundation
Stamps Assistant Professor Emilia Yang received the Arts Gender Equality Fellowship organized by CARE USA and the Rockefeller Foundation, which aims to harness the power of the arts to spark dialogues, commitments, and social change toward gender justice.
This initiative supports a cohort of visionary Arts for Gender Equality Fellows to connect their work with grassroots and international social justice and arts groups and political leaders for collective reflections, exploration, and action. They represent diverse voices from across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The fellowship follows Yang’s involvement in the Arts & Resistance theme semester. She received a grant from Arts & Resistance themed semester, an Institute for Research in Gender and Women (IRGW) Seed Grant, a Stamps Catalyst grant, and support from CARE and Rockefeller Foundation to complete her current project.
In an interview with CARE, Yang states, “I think art is a humanizing practice, a vulnerability praxis. It allows us to translate and articulate things and materials that language sometimes fails to express, it can serve for community building, as a tool for relationality, for carving spaces that are more free and caring, and it can help us orient and ground ourselves.”
Previously, Yang was selected as a 2023 Bellagio Center Resident by the Rockefeller Foundation, where she is a part of the Visual Arts, Literary Arts, and Filmmaking residents with a focus on gender equality. The Arts Gender Equality Fellowship is another way for Yang to continue her creation of community-based feminist, anti-racist, and transformative justice projects.
On November 17, Yang will lead the Union of Feminists Against the System (UNFAS) Transborder Convening Performance, Reading, and Info Session at the Stamps Gallery. The event is part of her Transnational Feminist Portals Multi-Year project.
