George Frayne: Commander Cody Plays Lexington Village Theatre Aug. 25
George Frayne (BDDes 1966, MFA 1968) — also known as Commander Cody, leader of the band Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen — will be playing a show at the Lexington Village Theatre on August 25, 2017.
The incredible Commander Cody Band has rocked across the globe for several decades now. Artist, musician, and pioneering band leader Commander Cody helped invent a wild new style of music during the early 1970s, a period regarded as the height of rock innovation. His take on roots, blues, jazz and rock is fresh and innovative- yet familiar and very convincing. Once known as Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, they were one of the first American bands to fuse divergent strains of American roots music – stripped-down basic rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, bop, country, western swing, and rockabilly – and create an innovative, yet familiar and convincing sound. Along with retro- revisionist bands like the Byrds, the Eagles and Poco, for whom the Airmen laid the groundwork, Cody and his crew played country-rock.
However, they usually rocked harder, making them the quintessential “bar band”. And whereas many of the group’s counterparts followed the bombastic trends of the day, the Lost Planet Airmen resisted overblown, pompous heirs. Instead, they preferred a no-frills, back- to-basics approach and are best remembered for their biggest hit, “Hot Rod Lincoln”, a high-octane tribute to the legends of rock music, as well as a string of now-classic albums. Their hits Hot Rod Lincoln and Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette) filled the airwaves throughout the 1970′s and 80′s. Rolling Stone Magazine named their album “Live From Deep In The Heart of Texas” one of the Top 100 Albums of All Time.
