George Frayne: New Car Art

The Saratoga Automobile Museum in Saratoga Springs, New York is proud to announce its classic car show on display now at the museum through October 31. Along with the classic automobiles on display, the museum will also feature the latest auto paintings by Stamps alumnus (MFA ​‘68) George Frayne (aka Commander Cody): Five acrylic paintings of 1950s car grills ​“from Buick through Edsel.” The paintings will be auctioned off to benefit the museum through a silent auction. Potential buyers can contact the artist directly through the museum for an in situ meet and greet.

I have always loved cars… I have been in more car wrecks than Evil Knieval and have had more than 40 automobiles. I have painted cars my entire life and have made sculptures from chrome bumpers and automotive parts. I’ve been perfecting my automotive portraits and abstract details of cars for over 50 years, I guess you could call me a chrome addict and I’m proud of it! Today I am working a new size of canvas that I have never used before and I really think it fits this project. I am happy to show my latest auto paintings here at the Saratoga Automobile Museum

Look in any book on the History of Rock and Roll and you’ll find Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airman. This 8‑piece super band was Billboard Magazine’s WORLD’S BEST LIVE BAND in 1974 – 75 and their album ​“Deep in the Heart of Texas” is one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 albums of all time. George Frayne earned his B.S. in Architectural Design (1966) and M.F.A. in Sculpture and Painting (1968) from the University of Michigan. He has exhibited in numerous national juried, group and individual shows throughout the United States. The books Musicians as Artists, and the newly published Beatle Art feature his paintings.

George Frayne lives in Saratoga Springs and divides his time between his love for painting and his love for piano.
