Hannah Smotrich and Stephanie Rowden Design Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Satellite Office @ UMMA
As part of their multi-year research effort, Creative Campus Voting Project, Stephanie Rowden and Hannah Smotrich, Associate Professors at the Stamps School of Art & Design, have designed a new Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Satellite Office at the U‑M Museum of Art (UMMA).
Located in the Stenn Gallery at UMMA (525 S State St, Ann Arbor), the satellite office will open on Tuesday, September 22, National Voter Registration Day, and run through Tuesday, November 3. The office will be open Monday-Friday, 10 am‑7 pm.
As part of a campus voter engagement effort and in alignment with campus COVID-19 protocols, the satellite office at UMMA is exclusively for U‑M students, faculty, and staff who plan to vote in Ann Arbor. A valid M‑Card is required for entry. The general public is encouraged to visit the Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Office (301 E. Huron St. Ann Arbor).
Visitors to the Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Satellite Office @ UMMA can:
* Register to vote in Ann Arbor
* Update their registration address
* Request an absentee ballot
* Drop off an absentee ballot (for city of Ann Arbor) — starting Thursday, September 24
The Creative Campus Voting Project is an investigation into how the skills and sensibilities of art and design practice can make the voting process less confusing, more visible, and appealing to college-age voters.
The Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Satellite Office @ UMMA is one of three Creative Campus Voting Project actions happening during the Fall 2020 semester, which also include SparkVotes Party , a game for small COVID-safe groups to learn about and celebrate early voting, and Ten Tuesdays, a weekly prompt or nudge to orient students as we move toward Tuesday, November 3rd.
The Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Office @ UMMA was created in collaboration and partnership with Ann Arbor City Clerk Jacqueline Beaudry; Professor Edie Goldenberg (Ford School); Briannon Cierpilowski (UMMA); Michael Rein (U‑M Office of the Vice President for Government Relations); and many others. This project is possible through the generous support of the University of Michigan’s Democracy and Debate Theme Semester.
