Holly Hughes Speaks at LGBTQ Community Center of NYC
Stamps Professor Holly Hughes spoke with Dr. David Roman, of USC, moderated by Todd Coulter, on the topic of Queer Critical Generosity on October 26 at 7 pm. The event was co sponsored by NOGO Arts, an organization focused on nurturing queer artistic work in all media, and the Bureau of General Services, at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of NYC at 208 W. 13th Street.
Roman first theorized the idea of critical generosity within a specifically queer context as a way to contextualize engaged art work as a form of AIDS Activism. He’s expanded the concept to center work by artists of color in terms of cultural impact beyond the standard assessment that evaluates art only thru a good/bad binary.
Hughes and Roman co-edited one of the first anthologies of queer performance, O Solo Homo: The New Queer Performance, for Grove Press, which won awards from both the Lambda Literary Foundation and the GLAAD Media Alliance.
