Jacob Stempky: Pittsburgh Tribune Review

A recent exhibition by Jacob Stempky (BFA 1998) and Gabe Felice at the Westmoreland Museum of Art was reviewed in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review by art critic Kurt Shaw.

Felice and Stempky’s art work together largely because of a love of drawing for both artists, as evidenced by strong lines and underlying contours found in their work.

“Drawing has always been something I was passionate about, along with store-bought art supplies,” Stempky says. ​“I am always keeping my eyes out for discarded materials for use in my work.”

For example,the painting ​“We Cannot Live Life As Usual” was created using a canvas Stempky found in an alley in Chicago, where he used to live. ​“After I stretched it, I discovered it contained the words that are in the title of the piece,” he says. ​“If you look closely, you can see remnants of those words hidden by the image, which is from a photo I took on a beautiful fall day and drawn using oil pastels and pencils.”
