John Gutoskey Featured in SLICE Ann Arbor
John Gutoskey (MFA 2011), owner and operator of A2 Print Studio, is profiled in the latest SLICE Ann Arbor interview, where he answers questions about his influences, work, and life.
John Gutoskey is the owner and operator of the A2 Print Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan. John launched the studio in September 2015 with the mission of providing affordable space to those interested in learning the art of printmaking, and for those who would like to rent time in a print studio to produce their own work. A visual artist, designer, and collector for over 35 years, John is focused on the media of printmaking, assemblage, and “found” objects, with inspiration derived from the works of Joseph Cornell, Betye Saar, Lucas Samaras, Outsider art, Art Brut, and religious art. In his earlier days, John held posts as a costume designer, working on theater, opera, dance, film, and television productions in New York City, and nationally. He earned a BFA in theater design with a minor in sculpture from Webster University in St. Louis, and a MFA from the U‑M Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, where he studied printmaking and installation. John also received a certificate in LGBTQ Studies from the U‑M Department of Women’s Studies. He was a therapeutic bodyworker for 18 years, and studied and taught meditation as well. When John is not working, you can find him reading, gardening, scavenging, watching films, and hanging out with friends. He resides in Ann Arbor with his husband, Peter Sparling, where he lives and works in a 1959 ranch filled with mid-century modern furniture, collections of vintage glass, barware & Pyrex, and artwork — mostly from other artists/friends — everywhere you look.
