Detroit-based artist Janet Hamrick paints in harmonious color fields of refined and subtle shifts of light and dark accented by patterns derived from calligraphy and flowers. A natural repetitive structure and pattern of decorative elements form a rhythmic composition. These works have a language or musical feel of their own, whether it is symphonic, jazz or even silence which can be nature. The pattern may dominate in some compositions where the negative space may be emphasized in others.
Hamrick works out of her studio in Ferndale, Michigan. She studied at the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit and at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL. She shows her work at the George Billis Gallery in New York and at the Lemberg Gallery in Ferndale, Michigan and has been exhibited throughout Greater Detroit and beyond, including the Detroit Institute of Arts (2015), the Venice Art Biennale in Italy (2014), the Windsor Biennial at the Art Gallery of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario (2007).
