Lee Deigaard: 2017 Joan Mitchell Center Artist-in-Residence
The Joan Mitchell Center on Bayou Road has selected Lee Deigaard (MFA 2002) as a Fall 2017 Artist-in-Residence. This program is a part of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, which celebrates the legacy of the artist Joan Mitchell and expands her vision to support the aspirations and development of diverse contemporary artists.
Lee Deigaard has lived and worked in New Orleans since 2002. She was trained as a sculptor and works in a variety of media including photography, installation, drawing, and video. Her work often portrays animal protagonists and cross-species interactions and connections.
The Joan Mitchell Center Artist-in-Residence program offers space and time for artists to create work in a contemplative environment, focusing on the transformative possibilities of a residency experience. In this space artists have the opportunity to explore new mediums and ideas over a period of time. The Center’s lodging is located in the Faubourg Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, a location that gives the artists access to the unique and historically dense city. The theme that will influence the public programming at the Center is “Legacy.”
