Leslie Nobler: “Heirlooms” in Harlem, NYC
“Heirlooms”, a solo exhibition by Leslie Nobler (BFA ‘80), is on display through the end of April at Lenox Coffee, 60 West 129th Street, New York, NY.
This solo exhibition, which originated at the metropolitan campus Art Gallery of Fairleigh Dickinsen University, delves into one’s heritage and/or faith, as it plays a role in mixed media/printmaking, featuring collages, monoprints, and artists’ books. I glean old objects and imagery, then reinvent them using alternative twists on digital painting and printmaking. Always interested in using modern technology to reincarnate symbolically rich, historic art and artisanry, I focus on visuals with ritual or religious significance, and rescued symbolic heirlooms. My newest works exhibited here grow out of a study of the Holocaust, gaining greater familiarity with its literature — fiction, non-fiction, and poetry; these pieces visualize some of the richest preserved images and relics.
