Work by Leslie Nobler (BFA 1980) is featured in PATTERNS of REFUGE, on view from August 3, 2017 — October 30, 2017 at Kean University’s Nancy Dryfoos Gallery.
The work in my show PATTERNS of REFUGE – mixed media, collage and digital painting entices viewers with color, material and elegantly complex layerings of geometric abstraction, lyrical imagery, and Ankara (African pattern), while its subtext brings troubling issues to light. Ethnophobia, intolerance, strife, escape and refuge seethe under the glossy, even hopeful, surfaces of these scrolls — most notably in a series using subtle computer-processed news images of war torn scenes.
