Leslie Sobel: Two-Person Show in Munster, Indiana
Work by Leslie Sobel (BFA 1983) is featured in Earthforms: Michalski & Sobel, on view at South Shore Arts — Atrium Gallery in Munster, IN from January 8‑March 8, 2020.
Jane Michalski and Leslie Sobel are two artists who explore their personal observations and concern for the earth using inventive abstract forms. Both artists employ encaustic wax medium on paper and panel, often combined with printing techniques.
Sobel approaches her artistic interpretation of the effects of climate change through scientific understanding. From Ann Arbor, Michigan, she has traveled to distant locations, including the Eclipse Ice Field to observe the landscape directly. Her work in this exhibition references both high latitudes and watersheds. She aims to explore both scientific understanding of how the world is changing and the grief felt at mounting losses in the Anthropocene.
A resident of Chicago for many years, Michalski has used a single location, an outcropping of ancient bedrock along the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin, as the inspiration for her personal abstractions. Her observations of this place have evolved through an understanding of the changing nature of the lakefront in contrast to the enduring presence of the bedrock. Her layered paintings reflect formal concerns and metaphorical interest in her subject matter.
