Melanie Manos Teaches Michigan Online MOOC
Over the course of the 20 – 21 academic year, U‑M Collegiate Lecturer, Kresge Artist Fellow (2020), Janie Paul Collegiate Lecturer, and alumna Melanie Manos (MFA ’08) collaborated with the U‑M Center for Academic Innovation to create Visualizing Women’s Work: Using Art Media for Social Justice, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC).
Visualizing Women’s Work invites virtual learners from across the globe to investigate how underrepresentation perpetuates cultural norms of gender inequality. Learners will also explore the global and local erasures of women’s work, both compensated and uncompensated, across identities and eras.
The course offers learners:
- A look into the artistic process
- An examination of the power and validity of art/design for addressing issues of social justice
- A deepened understanding of creative practice as a form of research — and the role of research in creative practice
Manos is the first Stamps instructor to create a course with the Center for Academic Innovation, a division of the university dedicated to making U‑M’s learning experiences accessible at scale. Her course will be available to the general public on FutureLearn, an online social learning platform in partnership with the University of Michigan.
While there is a cost to earn a verified certificate for the Visualizing Women’s Work course on FutureLearn, those fees are waived for any U‑M student, alumni, faculty, or staff if they access the course through Michigan Online. Michigan Online offers collections of MOOCs, Teach-Outs, and other learning content in addition to online degree programs produced by the University of Michigan. The course is expected to launch on July 26, 2021 and will run continuously.
