Michele Oka Doner Becomes NYBG Artist-in-Residence
Stamps alumna Michele Oka Doner (BSDes 1966, MFA 1968) was recently revealed as the New York Botanical Garden Artist-in-Residence for 2019. In her new capacity, she will examine our connection to the natural world through site-specific visual artworks and programs. Her explorations of nature, science, and art will allow visitors to see familiar Garden vistas through her unique lens. Past Artists-in-Residence include James Gurney, the Villalobos Brothers, and Humberto Spíndola.
Since graduating from Stamps, Michele Oka Doner has become an internationally renowned artist and author whose work is fueled by a lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world. Her artistic production includes the media of sculpture, prints, found objects, drawings, and more, and she has created over 40 public and private art installations. One of her most well-known works is “A Walk On The Beach”, an installation at the Miami International Airport composed of more than 9,000 bronzes embedded in terrazzo with mother-of-pearl.
