Nawal Motawi Unveils Havana-Inspired Tile Design
Nawal Motawi (BFA 1988), founder and owner of Motawi Tileworks, recently unveiled Havana, the latest addition to the Motawi installation line.
Havana is adapted from an early 20th century cement tile produced in Cuba’s capital, where vibrant tile patterns adorn residential, commercial and civic buildings throughout the city. This unique collection brings together the many ways tile design can be arranged and colored, yielding a seemingly infinite number of unique and enchanting patterns.
Motawi founded Motawi Tileworks more than 20 years ago. Graduating with her BFA and an interest in applied arts, she continued her study of tilemaking at Detroit’s storied Pewabic Pottery. Now, her two Ann Arbor-based companies, Motawi Tileworks and Rovin Ceramics, employ more than 30 people and have been featured in acclaimed publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Dwell Magazine.
