Omar Sosa-Tzec Presents at the 2019 ACM SIGDOC Conference

Stamps Professor Omar Sosa-Tzec presented his research on the evolution of interfaces, metaphors, and interface styles at the 2019 conference of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group for Design of Communication (SIGDOC).

The conference took place October 4 – 6, 2019, in Portland, Oregon. At this conference, Sosa-Tzec introduced a new theoretical construct for design, referred to as design tension.

Sosa-Tzec demonstrated design tension through an analysis of Instagram’s interface. This analysis showed how this app’s design is transforming our understanding of how user interface components look and function in touch screens. Sosa-Tzec also used design tension to argue how such a design is changing our perception of social phenomena, including the projection of identity to others and the notion of friendship. Sosa-Tzec urged attendees to apply design tension when analyzing and creating communication and information design products different from user interfaces, such as printed instructional materials.
