Adrian Holme interviewed Professor Phoebe Gloeckner for Varoom! Magazine’s ​“Empathy Issue.” They discuss her illustrations for the annotated edition of J.G. Ballard’s deeply controversial novel, The Atrocity Exhibition (1991, Re/​Search Publications, with photos by Ana Barrado) in relation to Ballard’s idea that ​“we live in a culture beyond empathy.” How does one visually express the idea of ​“the death of affect?”
