Rebekah Modrak Discusses Art as Social Practice at the Broad Museum

Stamps Professor Rebekah Modrak joins xtine burrough (media artist), Judy Walgren (curator and Associate Director at MSU’s School of Journalism), and Petra Kuppers (community performance artist) to discuss the new book Art as Social Practice: Technologies for Change at the MSU Broad Art Museum.

Art as Social Practice: Technologies for Change, co-edited by burrough and Walgren, explores how artists use their creative practices to raise consciousness, form communities, create change, and bring forth social impact through new technologies and digital practices. Modrak’s chapter in the book, ​“Can This Be a Community When You’re Trying To Sell Me A Luxury Watch?”, examines corporate attempts to build ​“community” and proposes strategies for community-engaged art practices that trouble consumer culture’s fantastical claims and unethical representations.
