Red Crossing by Graf, Low, and Tobier at Winnipeg Design Festival
Red Crossing by Stamps Associate Professor Roland Graf/Assocreation, Professor Nick Tobier/Everyday Places, and Jennifer Low (MDes candidate ’20) was one of three winning projects selected from international competition for the 2019 Winnipeg Design Festival PROTO- in the category “Play”. The project had its North American première in Winnipeg on September 27th.
Since its inception in 2011, the Winnipeg Design Festival has fostered an ongoing growth of public awareness and appreciation towards the rich community of talented individuals and groups, and their outcomes, in various fields of design working in Winnipeg. Past participants and speakers include 5468796 Architecture, 1×1 Architecture, Public City Architecture, Thom Fougere, Lennard Taylor, Freya Bjorg Olafson, and John Patkau.
This year’s festival was curated and directed by Jae-Sung Chon and his design team STUFF (Studio for Transformative Urban Forms and Fields). Chon believes that Winnipeg should be a city for prototyping new ideas with the charge “Let’s rebrand Winnipeg as a proto-city: a city where new ideas are encouraged and embraced, as its core urbanism.”
PLAY_STREET is an international competition to re-imagine the urban street as a play space. The challenge of the competition is to design or plot a set of playful and performative activities that claims the street as a public space, a PLAY space. This year’s jury was comprised of:
Liz Wreford | Public City Architecture | Winnipeg
Marianne Amodio | MA+HG | Vancouver
Luis Callejas | LCLA | OSLO
