Remembering David Johnston (1933-2016) at Studio Montclair
Remembering David Johnston (1933−2016), an exhibition of the work of 1958 Stamps alumnus David Johnston, will be on view through July 28, 2017, at Studio Montclair in Montclair, New Jersey.
Studio Montclair presents an exhibition to run from May 19 through July 28, 2017: “Remembering David Johnston (1933−2016)” in the Virginia Block Gallery on the second floor of the Academy Square Galleries, 33 Plymouth St., Montclair, NJ. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, May 19, coinciding with the Montclair Art Walk.
This posthumous exhibit will commemorate the work of David Johnston, a graduate of the University of Michigan, Stamps School of Art and Design, Class of 1958, and will feature work from throughout his career. Curated by his long-time friend and colleague, Robert J. Koenig, who is also writing an essay to accompany the show, the exhibition will include watercolors and mixed media on Japanese paper as well as acrylics on canvas.
Johnston was a prolific and highly esteemed artist, who had over forty one-person shows during his lifetime in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, England, and the United States.
Reviewing his one-man show at the Montclair Art Museum, The New York Times wrote: “Poetic and distinctive… handles watercolor as if it were an effluence of his own blood.”
