Riopelle: Holiday Art Show and Pop-Up
The Riopelle studio collective will be opening its first annual Art show and pop-up Holiday shop, “Greetings from Dertoit: The Motor Town.” The show will be focused on prints, clothing, and work lampooning popular Detroit brands and companies as well showcasing recent work by the studio collective’s artists and designers. The show and holiday shop will have its grand opening at their Eastern Market Studio on the night of Friday, December 5th and will have further open hours during Eastern Market’s Holiday Street Markets.
The show’s theme, “Greetings from Dertoit: The Motor Town,” was conceived by Riopelle Studio members in response to the overwhelming amount of companies, both new and old, trying to capture and capitalize on Detroit’s spirit and style.
“We’ve seen plenty of brands and companies popping up to make a buck off of the ‘Made in Detroit’ trend,” says Dylan Box (BFA 2012), who is no stranger to the Detroit clothing trend after running the PRAMU pop-up clothing shop in West Village in 2012. “We love the amount of pride people place in our city, and we want to take an opportunity to laugh at ourselves for it, too.” The collection focuses on lovingly satirizing the many of the city’s favorite sites (Bell Island), neighborhoods (East Marketplace), and companies (Expedient Loans). Friday night’s opening will have work for viewing and sale, holiday cheer, and light refreshments.
The Holiday shop will feature prints, clothing, and work from the “Greetings from Dertoit” show as well as recent work and handmade gifts from Riopelle’s seven resident artists and designers. Riopelle is located at 1492 Gratiot Avenue with parking available on Gratiot and the surrounding streets.
