As one of the 8 original artists who started the Open Studios concept in Whanganui, New Zealand eleven years ago, Rita Dibert (BFA 1969, MFA 1971) is joining 66 artists and artist cooperatives in seven regions of their small regional art centre to present their work and their studios to the art-buying public. Now in her 17th year heading up the Photography area at the Quay School of Art in Whanganui, New Zealand, Rita came to New Zealand from a teaching position at UNC Charlotte on a two year contract as a taster” and has never left.

Whanganui, situated on the Tasman Sea has one of the world’s most moderate climates, ranging from mild winters (25 – 40F) to sunny summers (65 – 84F). Whanganui is an arts cloister” with galleries, workshops and a glass specialty school that has fed artists studio-workshops throughout the North Island. The Open Studios run two weekends, March 23 — 24 and March 30 — 31 from 10 – 4 daily with a centrally located gallery site that highlights a piece from each displaying artist.
