Smithsonian Exhibition Features David Chung’s Work

Stamps Professor David Chung​‘s work is featured in the the Korea Gallery at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

The Korea Gallery at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, celebrating the distinctive art, history and culture of Korea, has been extended through 2016. The 1,800-square-foot exhibition illustrates Korea’s rich history and unique culture using 85 artifacts and artworks from the museum’s collection and other sources. The exhibition is organized into seven thematic sections. The section on ​“Korean Ceramics: A Tradition of Excellence” includes examples ranging from ceramics buried approximately 1,500 years ago in the tombs of Korea’s rulers to 21^st-century ceramic artworks. Other sections of the exhibition include ​“Hangeul: Symbol of Pride” (focuses on calligraphy and Hangeul script, the Korean writing system); ​“Honoring Family”; ​“The Korean Wedding”; ​“Landscapes of Korea” (highlights the Korean peninsula’s natural history and its built landscape); and ​“Korea Beyond Borders” (addresses identity among millions of Koreans and their descendants living outside of Korea); and a section on contemporary Korean art featuring the work of Stamps Professor David Chung.
