Announcing Stamps Gallery Opening, New Gallery Director

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan is proud to announce the opening of the new Stamps Gallery in downtown Ann Arbor. Srimoyee Mitra was recently appointed to manage the 8,000 square foot gallery as the new Stamps Gallery Director.

A public open house reception will take place on Friday, March 10 from 5-8 pm in celebration of the school’s Graduate Thesis Exhibition. The Stamps Gallery (201 S. Division Street – 1st floor of the McKinley Towne Centre) represents the school’s deep commitment to curatorial programming and its role in contemporary art and design education.

Mitra comes to the Stamps School from the Art Gallery Windsor (Canada), where she served as the Curator of Contemporary Art for the past five years. In this role, Mitra developed an award-winning series of exhibitions, public programs, publications, and partnerships. Prior to joining AGW, she was the programming co-coordinator at SAVAC, the South Asian Visual Arts Centre in Toronto. Srimoyee is an Adjunct Faculty member at the School of Creative Arts, University of Windsor and holds an MA in art history and BA in drama studies and international studies, both from York University (Toronto). Of her vision for the Stamps Gallery, Mitra stated:

“I envision a space that is inclusive, lively and expansive. The Stamps Gallery will cultivate and nurture a responsive, experimental and robust program where audiences, community members, and creative practitioners work collaboratively to make real social change. Together we will examine the role of creative practices in the 21st Century to re-design and imagine a society where people from diverse backgrounds live together, learn from one another, and build mutually respectful dialogues.”

In addition to work by graduate and undergraduate students at the Stamps School, the Stamps Gallery will organize regular exhibitions of contemporary art and design work from world-class, professional creative practitioners. The Stamps Graduate Thesis Exhibition is scheduled from March 10 - April 1, 2017 and will include a public reception on Friday, March 10 from 5-8 pm.
