Susan Crowell Exhibits at ARC Gallery, Chicago
In early September, Crowell had an accident and broke her right shoulder on the way to her studio. The sculpture in this exhibition appears lyrical, voluptuous and colorful, but it is grounded in the transformation of difficulty, and it investigates the complex interactions of pain, suffering., growth and transcendence. Having researched pain from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, including religion, psychology, physiology, and personal experience, Crowell will present “Biomorphography”, a testimony to nociceptors, the neural receptors that transmit pain. The exhibition examines the inscription of pain upon the human body, and contextualizes its role in the health and maintenance of living organisms. The exhibition will run from January 5 until January 29, 2011, with a reception for the artists on January 7 from 6 – 9 pm.
