Terrence Campagna: Elmhurst Art Museum
Terrence Campagna’s (BFA 1999) work “Sundial for a Shukke” is part of the exhibition New American Paintings: Midwest Edition at the Elmhurst Art Museum near Chicago, Illinois. The exhibition runs from May 16 — August 23.
For the first time in its 20 year history, the critically acclaimed publication, New American Paintings, which presents a juried exhibition-in-print with each issue, will jump from the page to the Museum walls. New American Paintings: The 2014 Midwest Edition features 40 artists selected by Elmhurst Art Museum Chief Curator, Staci Boris.
Boris selected from more than 400 works submitted by artists from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Iowa. The resulting exhibition offers a panoramic view of the disparate ways in which paint is used as a medium in contemporary art practice.
Campagna’s recent wall hangings are made from materials he collected while walking and living in both rural and urban regions of the U.S. between 2011 — 2015. Much of the weathered wood he uses in his recent artwork was gathered from a variety of rural outbuildings that were in the process of decay. Campagna disassembled parts of the outbuildings and cut the wood into hundreds and hundreds of strips on a table saw. He joined the older wood with strips of newer wood that were painted using the bright color palette of interstate road signs.
