The Battle of Boyhood explores significant objects from my brother’s childhood that were left to be forgotten. As the youngest of three girls, I am no stranger to the trials and tribulations that are tacked onto every waking moment of female adolescence. But what about boys? Why are their struggles seldom addressed? I recreated a battle scene painting as a metaphor for the emotional and intrapersonal battles my brother was met with during his formative years. I spent time uncovering and collecting these items he once held dear as well as gathering audio recordings that allow the audience to hear his voice describe his connection with these objects. Although he found no place in the present for these relics, the connection between him and them remains; as he has grown, the objects have become overgrown.
