I seek to explore the relationship between my interest in craft, my gender, and my sexuality, specifically the feelings of inadequacy they provoke within me. To address this problem I’ve created a series of objects. Six framed 12x15 multimedia works hang on the wall, arranged three across and two down. These works situated on fiber interfaces are presented above a table. The table top is embellished with six hand crafted fiber-based multimedia objects. The work expresses my millennial queer female sensibilities, a representation of what I would like to see in art and how I see myself. The collection navigates those multiple identities and highlights pivotal experiences that shaped my existence. I employ handicraft and it’s female and queer lineage, as a tool of empowerment, celebration, and subversion. Humor in titles and imagery provide an entry point to an otherwise serious and easily dismissed subject: sexuality. By making visible what sometimes feels like qualities to be ashamed of I’m promoting growth within myself, society, and Art.
