Dale, Dale, Dale is an interactive installation that addresses systemic and symbolic violence against Latinx migrant workers using the traditional act of breaking piñatas to reference the commodification of a community and culture. Within my work, I explore the piñata as a highly commodified and appropriated symbol of Mexican culture to challenge stereotypes and reconstruct the narrative surrounding Mexican bodies. I attempt to debunk the myth of the “job stealing” immigrant to expose the underlying hypocrisy surrounding exploitation of migrant labor, immigration policies, and anti-immigrant sentiment within America. Viewers are invited to engage with the shopping experience as a way to confront our abusive role as consumers.
