In the Margins is an experimental animation which follows queer and transgender Muslims as they investigate the complex relationships between their gender and faith. This ongoing story of vulnerability, growth, and love creates a temporal quilt that acts as a starting point for many people to recognize and understand Islamic queerness.
I have interviewed four subjects who identify as queer and/or trans and Muslim about their pivotal moments of growth and new understandings of their identities. Through this, I’ve learned about race, ability, and class in addition to gender and its effects on these people’s relationships to faith. Each vignette is created in a different style, mirroring the variances between each person and their relationships to their identities. There is no monolithic queer Muslim experience, and I invite you to consider the value in the vastness of Islamic queerness.
