Disco Metastasis reflects my ambivalence toward breast cancer in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Using garish, red, sexy bikini fabric formed into a bulbous mass, I am creating a ‘breast’ and its connective tissue. Many women such as myself have a higher possibility of breast cancer going undetected due to dense tissue, making mammograms less likely to catch anything, meaning there are life-threatening horrors hiding within something beautiful, sensual and life-giving. Creating this sculpture is my way of forming a protective talisman to ward off the possibility of getting the disease.
