For most Americans, their genealogy charts include immigration; my forebears missed the Mayflower. Entering the United States by Canada and Ellis Island, they found a "land of milk and honey." Even if not treated as equals by those who arrived earlier, they had the opportunity to become part of this Nation's fabric and did so. How can citizens take pride in the iconic Statue of Liberty and the sculpture, "Freedom," perched on the U.S. Capitol dome, but not keep the doors open to other seekers? Can that welcome (or not) approach succeed?
