Description: The visual surface of a painting invites imaginative engagement by implying space and movement that do not exist except in a viewer’s acts of perception. This course focuses on building knowledge of the basic tools of oil painting in order to create this engagement intelligently. Through a series of paintings from observation as well as from imagination, students investigate the potential of color, surface, mark, and form to create spaces and movement that refer to the external world as well as to those that are unique to the pictorial plane.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in both the fall and winter terms of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
