Florilegium: A Plant Compendium (UMBS)

Prerequisites: ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: ARTDES 205: Intro to Painting: Organizing Visual Space, ARTDES 270: Visualizing and Depicting Ideas. PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR IS REQUIRED.

Description: You are invited to create a florilegium (from Latin: to gather), a collection of drawings and paintings of plants and flowers found near the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS) in Pellston, MI, about 4 hours north of Ann Arbor. (Transportation will be provided if needed). As part of this 2‑credit extension, you will spend 10 days at the UMBS before fall classes begin in Ann Arbor. Class dates for 2023 are May 27 — June 6. Both in the field and in the studio, you will identify, draw, paint, and take note of plant biology. You will receive drawing and painting instruction from Stamps School of Art and Design lecturer Cathy Barry, and an introduction to plant structures, habitats, reproduction, and taxonomy from botanist Dr. Susan Fawcett. In 2023, room and board while at UMBS is covered; you only pay tuition. These are assigned as Fall credits. ARTDES 353 is not required for students taking the ARTDES 352 Forilegium studio class in the fall. However, if you enroll in ARTDES 353, you must also enroll in ARTDES 352. Permission of instructor is required to enroll in ARTDES 353 and/​or 352.

Frequency: This course is typically offered in August of every academic year, though scheduling may vary according to future term circumstances.
