Semester: Winter 2024
Prerequisites: No Prerequisites.
Description: This studio course explores books as an expressive medium, one in which haptic forms and sequential content are coequal. While examining the historical and contemporary structures available for handling at the University libraries, the course will present increasingly complex bindings through hands-on workshops, asking that students become comfortable with and embrace the myriad structural, material, and conceptual possibilities of the book form. Students will be asked to develop and present original content. Explorations will include varied methods for making and reproducing images and text, and the sculptural possibilities of paper (and alternate) mechanisms. Readings about the history and the development of attendant technologies: paper, print and materials from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas are included.
