The 2022 Stamps School Senior Exhibition features work in a range of media by graduating BA, BFA, and Interarts Performance students at U‑M’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

Join us for a public closing celebration on April 29 from 6 – 8 pm: time-based work will be screened at 6:30 and 7:30 pm in the Art & Architecture Auditorium (room 2104).

There are two identical frames against two white walls facing each other. They are both hanging at eye height, a foot away from where the walls meet in the corner. the frames are filled with 3D, hot pink, amorphsc shapes, bursting out of the frames. The shapes are covered with vibrant, multicolored yarns and knits, of various thicknesses. .

Undergraduate Hana Agolli: Taking Up Space

Situated on the floor within three white walls sits a figure composed of cardboard boxes. The figure is in the fetal position. The boxes have various branding and logos on them, reflecting items the artist consumed while working on this project. On the central wall behind the figure, at standing eye level, are a series eight receipts hanging. Each receipt has an anecdote and reflection about one of the boxes used within the figure.

Undergraduate Breanna Boersma: Come Nest; Come Rest

The painting depicts seven figures, who all look identical, interacting at a bar. They are painted in a realistic fashion, each figure wearing the same white shirt and black pants. Describing the figures from left to right, the first two are kissing each other. The third is leaned back in his chair and adorned in jewelry. The fourth one is behind the bar, pouring the fifth figure a drink and shouting at someone out of frame. The fifth is focused on the drink he is being poured and the sixth is focused on his phone with headphones on. The seventh and last figure is looking straight at the viewer.

This image displays the back wall of a 3-walled studio space. On this wall hangs a black and white, high-contrast photograph. This photograph captures a naked figure on her side as she lays atop 500, 1” tall cylindrical, ceramic pieces. These white ceramic forms sit against a black background and form a shape similar to the shape of the model who lies in fetal position, facing left. The framed piece hangs amidst a wall covered in nearly 1,000 ceramic forms and bovine bones. Similar to the photograph, the ceramic pieces and bovine bones are spray painted white and hang against a black wall.

Undergraduate Whitney Brooks: The Replo Showroom

There are three characters total, each created on my body with prosthetics, heavy makeup, and costuming. I created each of their physical attributes with scar wax and prosthetics that I bought online. Brenda has a blonde updo, and has large cheekbones from plastic surgery that have aged and wrinkled over time. She has large, injected lips. She wears a blue velour tracksuit and tennis shoes. Each of Brenda's photographs are framed in ornate, gold frames. Mia is a bad-ass brunette woman based on Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. She is wearing ripped, boot-cut jeans, and a black zip-up. She has very chiseled cheekbones, luscious lips, and high eyebrows. All of her photographs are framed in dark wooden frames. Amber has very, very large injected lips, and long blonde hair extensions. She is wearing a pink matching set. She vapes.

The image shows a cubicle sized space draped in layers of lavender chiffon. On top of the all encompassing fabric, 10 sculptures cover the walls. Resembling 'baby bumps', the round sculptures are covered in different colored fabric and embroidered with grotesque stretch marks. Red lights shine on the walls creating a pink glow that highlights the most detailed 'bumps' of the series. Each sculpture is hung at 'belly height' which corresponds with the height of the artist.

Undergraduate Kendra Eaton: Casual Crevice

Welcome to My Fucking Brain transforms the studio space around you to immerse yourself into my "brain", primarily using paper and written text that is torn and put back together again using glue, tape, pins, more paper, paper mache paste, bandaids, anything I could get my hands on. Within this space, exists a hand crafted book placed within a box in which the viewer can pull out and read. The book uses various paper along with fabric to create a short narrative that describes my experiences with mental illness, piecing together the pieces seen across the room.

Undergraduate Ulrik Frikke-Schmidt: Sound Overload

My exhibition consists of a reconceptualized installation of my childhood bedroom, as I remember it as an adult. Intended to evoke a relationship between the viewer and my space of pre-adolescent reflection, the “room” includes a nightstand featuring books from my childhood library and a framed picture of my parents beside a twin-size bed. The piece, a blanket handwoven with stuffed animals, polyester filling, children’s clothing, and a baby blanket is laid across the bed, with an accompanying fiber sculpture emerging from the bottom right corner of the bed. The sculpture, created with large mounds of polyester filling and the stuffed animals from which the poly-fill came, materializes from the weaving, flooding onto the floor. The contrast between the weaving and disruptive sculpture is meant to aid in the viewers' understanding of my process, presenting my memories, both woven together and still floating around in my cloud of consciousness.

On the left wall closest to the entryway, there is a shoe rack with a label on the wall that invites viewers to "Kindly Take off your shoes before entering. Please feel free to grab a cushion and sit." In all it is a homey setting.

Nahee Kang paints a rectilinear geometric pattern on a canvas and embroiders stripes to fill out all of the squares in between. A total of 26 canvases with different colors are covering the walls, and they are all connected through the same line pattern emerging from the walls with colored tape. Kang also offers the viewers to engage with her work by setting up a series of tiles with lines that connect and creates a larger pattern.

A table and two chairs sit atop a circular black rug. The furniture, which was originally white, has been splashed with red paint on the legs of the table and the lower half of the chairs in a way that looks bloody. On the table are small, freestanding books, ranging from half an inch to five inches in height. They are all different, but clearly part of a collection, and they have the same horror theme as the furniture. The books are black, white and red, and contain cut and pasted text.

Undergraduate Grace Klein: Fluid Atelier

A mirror covered in wax and smaller, broken mirror pieces, with a portrait of the artist on the right, rests above a sink. The wax on the mirror is meant to mimic skin. The skin is covered in used up bottles of various skincare products. On either side of the mirror, there are rows of porcelain tiles. Each tile is a close-up monochromatic portrait of the artist picking at the skin of her face.

The image shows a cubical shopping area, illuminated by neon red lighting. White flooring and walls serve as a backdrop for display cases made out of wood, glass and acrylic. The floating shelving units, paired with transparent containers and circular windows, give the space a more contemporary finish. With the exception of the display pedastal placed in the center, wide walkways divide the mounted displays and create an open layout. The vision for this space is rooted in a desire to downplay the grotesque–the reality that what‘s being displayed are organs and tissues extracted from living people. Their fleshy textures appear in stark contrast to the uncluttereddisplays. Bright, red letters accomany each product. The signages are reminiscent of those found in common retain chains, though what they relay is something completely out of the ordinary.

Undergraduate Laynie Leach: Plastic Girl

The image displays a painting of the Hmong diaspora and my personal stories navigating my indigenous/ethnic minority heritage. It is large scale painting made up of nine individual paintings, where the entirety of the image connects to one another by following a river. What is painted depicts the Hmong people and their journey to becoming refugees after America's Secret War in Laos and their migration into America. The background of the paintings are all toned with a light brown background but humans, plants, homes, buildings, cars, helicopters, desks and food are all painted with bright pigments of oil paint. The style is generally painted in a realistic style, along with quick gestures to show a mass of people, while the overall essence or tone of this painting is historical and based on humanitarian rights.

The image featured above shows the piece titled: The Frustration of the Growing Girl. The large soft sculpture is quilted and constructed into a cone shaped monument about four feet tall and created entirely out of deep blue cyanotypes. The images on the cyanotypes are old family pictures with the figures partaking in jewish ceremonies. The cyanotypes stretch past the base of the cone and climb up the wall. Around the base of the cone there are a series of collaged Polaroid images. The Polaroids show signs of physically deconstructing the images and working back into them using materials such as thread, printed images, cutout and human hair.

14 trasparent acrylic sheets are hanging from a support structure using transparent fishing line. The sheets are hanging close to each other in a disorganized way. Each sheet has a calendar grid engraved on them with different modifications. Some calendars are shortened to have missing days, some have weeks cut out, some are stretched to appear longer, and some are warped so the lines of the grid in the calendar are waving. The sheets are of various sizes, the smallest 20 inches tall and the largest is 48 inches tall. Four of sheets are bent in a wavy and non-uniform pattern.

This is an image of a pair of pants hanging next to a quilt on a white wall. The pants are a light striped gray, with holes in them that have been patched with gray, blue, purple, and tan fabric. More holes have been cut from the patched pants, and you can see the wall through the holes in the pant legs. The quilt is made of the same gray, blue, purple and tan fabrics that were used to patch the pants. Patches are visible in some of the quilt squares, where pieces were taken from the pants. The pattern of the quilt falls apart as it moves away from the center, until it reaches the edge and the pattern is no longer recognizable.

On the ground, there is a gold ornate frame resting on the left wall, with two stumps on the ground next to it. On these stumps there are 4 potted plants, 2 of which are fake. Underneath these is a green carpet that simulates what moss looks like. This ties in the series of art hanging on the white walls. The series consists of 7 framed works of art that all have various themes of flora. Starting from the left is "purple petals" which has green ivy and purple flowers like iris and lilacs. Next to that is "a symbol of love, which has dead roses in the center and is surrounded by fake roses. Under that is "bed of wildflowers" which has moss, various colored fake flowers, and bits of mirrors throughout it. Next to that is "death in beauty" which has fake and real hydrangeas. On the next wall is "evergreens" which has real tree bark, moss, and various fake evergreens. Next to that is "forest floor" which has fake tropical leaves and ferns and moss. The last piece is "hanging wisteria" which is a mirror with moss around it and white wisteria hanging from it.

January 2: Regular open/public hours and authorized MCard access resumes at 7:00 am. NOTE: Studio access for students will be removed the week of December 18. (The exception is those with studios in room 1000, which is only closed December 25-January 2). Students will need to request access to studios for the new semester when they return the week of January 8th.
