Danielle Aubert (visiting artist for TMP2; graphic designer, faculty at Wayne State) and Haynes Riley (lecturer, Stamps School of A&D) led the TMP2 course in a letterform project. Students each received a letterform and re-created this specific form ten different ways using found materials and objects. Recreations were attentive to the particular properties of their letterform – stroke weight, serifs, counter space, the way the stem terminates, etc. Students photographed and printed these ten recreated iterations. Using the gridding method, they then enlarged one image through painting and drawing processes.
Together, all 173 students’ letters created the Jean Arp quote:
“Soon silence will have passed into legend. Day after day we invent machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, mediation.”
