David Chung Exhibits at Pyramid Atlantic

Work by Stamps Professor David Chung is featured in Reflecting Back to the Future, an exhibition at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in the Washington, D.C. area.

The exhibition is a celebration of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center’s 40^th anniversary, featuring treasured archives by many significant artists and curated by Pyramid’s Founder Helen C. Frederick. The works are part of a collection resulting from a printmaking and publishing residency that Pyramid operated from 1981 – 2007. 

Featured work by David Chung includes the print ​“Double Leg Hold,” a linocut printed by the artist while he was creating a lithograph edition, ​“Strip Mall,” at Pyramid. Typical of Chung’s black and white drawings, the print highlights spontaneity and assurance with positive and negative space, as well as the artist’s love of cutting into linoleum. 

“Growing up in the ​’70s as a kid, Bruce Lee and all those kung fu movies were a huge influence because they were one of the very few things that focused on Asian culture… Even if those movies were in some ways exploitive, it was still great to see Asian people in the hero role instead of being the dishwasher or something. The action heroes in those films resonated deeply for me and my friends… you could learn fighting skills from the Asian people, create armies, stuff like that. It all had a huge impact.”
