Dylan AT Miner named Senior Associate Dean
The University of Michigan Board of Regents unanimously approved the appointment of Dylan AT Miner as the Senior Associate Dean for Research, Creative Practice, and Graduate Education at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.
Miner, a renowned artist and scholar whose work transcends the boundaries of art, activism, administration, and scholarship, is set to significantly impact the Stamps School. His career spans 16 years at Michigan State University. Miner’s former role as a dean and participation in the 2022 – 2023 Big Ten Academic Alliance Dean’s Leadership Program underscores his commitment to transformational institutional change. Miner’s new role will focus on key areas for the School.
“The Stamps School is a global leader in arts and design education with a strong foundation in creative practice, research, and radical transdisciplinary graduate education,” said Miner. “I look forward to working with the Stamps community to cultivate opportunities for students and faculty that foster their collective scholarly and creative pursuits.”
As the Senior Associate Dean for Research, Creative Practice, and Graduate Education, Miner will oversee the Stamps School’s research, creative practice, graduate education, and public programming. This multifaceted role involves developing and implementing a structured, transparent, and effective administrative program for research and creative projects. In addition, Miner is responsible for fostering relationships with external collaborators and leading strategic initiatives that enhance the School’s reputation and outward engagement. Miner’s role will also encompass operational oversight for visitor programs, the Stamps Gallery, and guiding graduate education within the School. As a member of the School’s Executive Leadership Team and Senior Staff, he will be in a pivotal position to influence the direction and vision of the School.
Artistic and Scholarly Endeavors
Miner holds a PhD in Art History (Arts of the Americas) from The University of New Mexico. His interdisciplinary training provides the academic foundation for his diverse contributions in the fields of art, activism, and academia.
As an artist, Miner has hung more than two dozen solo art exhibitions and participated in more than 115 group exhibitions. He has created graphics for numerous community organizations, social justice campaigns, and environmental organizations, including the Natural Resource Defense Council, among others. A prolific writer, Miner’s book Creating Aztlán: Chicano Art, Indigenous Sovereignty, and Lowriding Across Turtle Island was published by the University of Arizona Press. In addition, his bibliography includes writings published through Duke University Press, Yale University Press, Oxford University Press, University of Toronto Press, and many more. His recent article, “Rivers of Resistance,” published in Canadian Geographic (September/October 2022), continues to draw attention to his work as an activist and scholar.
