Joyce Brienza Exhibits at North Campus Research Complex
Work by Stamps Lecturer Joyce Brienza is featured in Floating Points, a solo exhibition on view at the North Campus Research Complex through April 16, 2018.
Joyce Brienza is a Detroit artist who has shown work nationally and internationally. The paintings and drawings in this exhibition express her decades long interest in the “places between” the conscious and unconscious, representation and abstraction, male and female, high art and low. The pictures are combinations of disparate elements evoking the surprise that accompanies a dream state and that create a poetical wave that will float the viewer if only they submit. Works consist of multiple — fragmented parts that are connected but ultimately separate. As with the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi, the very imperfectly hand drawn patterns and constructions of roughly glued scraps of paper shows the beauty that comes with wear and obvious repair.
Brienza is a graduate of Mason Grosse School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has taught art in New Jersey, California, and Michigan, where she is currently faculty at the Penny Stamps School of Art and Design.
