Joyce Brienza is Detroit based artist who earned her bachelors degree at Wayne State University and later received an MFA at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University where she studied under feminist luminaries Joan Semmel and Martha Rosler. She has been active in the Detroit based performance collective the “Cathartic Circle” led by Sue Carman, and has exhibited work nationally and internationally. She has taught art in New Jersey and California, and currently teaches at University of Michigan and Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. Brienza has received Artist in Residence awards at the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy at Rutgers University, and Detroit Children’s Hospital where her multiple collaborations with young patients have been permanently installed throughout the building.
