Stamps Gallery to kick off 2023 fall events
Stamps Gallery, a dynamic space of contemporary art and design, is thrilled to unveil its lineup of upcoming exhibitions and events. From thought-provoking exhibitions to interactive workshops and celebratory gatherings, Stamps Gallery continues to be a hub for artistic diversity and creative expression.
This season, the Gallery is featuring three different exhibitions: Untold Stories, Part I, The Blessings of the Mystery, and Respond/Resist/Rethink 2023.
“This lineup reflects the vibrant creative culture and diverse artistic voices of our community and beyond,” says Srimoyee Mitra, Director of Stamps Gallery. “We invite everyone to participate in our program this fall and engage in the multiple perspectives of Stamps students, faculty, and staff alongside the artistic rigor of leading artists, elders, and organizers working nationally and internationally.”
For students, there will be a Stamps Gallery Welcome Event on September 7 from 6:30 — 8:00 p.m. There will be hands-on activities, a DJ, and light refreshments.

Stamps Gallery kicks off its series of events with the DIY Typography Workshop co-sponsored by the U‑M Arts Initiative. Participants can make their own hand-printed posters and prints after a demonstration by Stamps Professor Endi Poskovic. Registration is required.
Untold Stories, Part I: Opening Reception

Celebrate the opening of “Untold Stories, Part I” with the Stamps community! The first part of this series features the work of faculty members Jim Cogswell, Carlos F. Jackson, Heidi Kumao, Franc Nunoo Quarco, and Emilia Yang. The artists will be in attendance, and light refreshments will be served. Untold Stories, Part I: 2023 Stamps Faculty Exhibition is on view at Stamps Gallery from September 15-December 9, 2023.
The Blessings of the Mystery Opening Reception
Date: September 28, 2023 | Time: 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Explore the extraordinary exhibition of “The Blessings of the Mystery” at the opening reception. This exhibition, running from September 28 to December 15, 2023, examines themes of socio-economic, environmental activism, encounters between history and memory, Indigenous rights, and the formation and distribution of knowledge. The exhibition features work by Carolina Caycedo and David de Rozas. Artist David de Rozas and special guest Elder Juan Mancias (Chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas) will be in attendance.
Artist Talk and Birch Bark Biting Workshop with Kelly Church

Join us for an artist talk by renowned artist, educator, activist, and culture keeper Kelly Church (MFA‘98). Church is a member of the Gun Lake Band in Michigan and a Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Ojibwe descendent. Following her artist talk, Church will lead a workshop on the Indigenous art practice of birch bark biting. Spaces are limited, and registration is required.

“Capture the Look” celebrates the intersection of fashion and photography. Stamps students Nina Rachelle and Bryan Wilson will showcase their creations and discuss their collaborative practice at this event. RSVP requested.
Respond/Resist/Rethink Celebration at Stamps Gallery

Discover the power of creativity and social change at Stamps Gallery’s celebration of “Respond/Resist/Rethink: An Exhibition of Student Art for Change.” This exhibition showcases the creativity and works of U‑M students from all three campuses, highlighting their perspectives on creating a just and equitable future. This exhibition for change, running from November 3 to December 9, 2023, highlights the transformative power of art in addressing pressing social issues.
Respond/Resist/Rethink Celebration at Riverbank Arts, Flint
Date: November 10, 2023 | Time: 6:00 – 9:00 pm
Join us for a celebration of “Respond/Resist/Rethink: An Exhibition of Student Art for Change” at Riverbank Arts, U‑M Flint. The exhibition features work by U‑M students from across all three campuses. Light refreshments will be served.
Towards Inclusive Practice: Japanese Papermaking Workshop
Date: November 12, 2023 | Time: 12:00 – 3:00 pm
Stamps Professor Endi Poskovic, Witt Visiting Artist Nicholas Cladis, and students will discuss the communal nature of the Japanese papermaking workshop and demonstrate sheet formation using kozo and mitsumata fibers. Participants will make their own hand-made sheets of paper applying Japanese nagashizuki method Kozo/mitsumata fibers, and tororo-aoi will be provided. This event is held in conjunction with ARTDES 348 Japanese Papermaking and Water-printing Course, Respond/Resist/Rethink: A Student Exhibition for Change, and the Arts & Resistance Theme Semester.

Respond/Resist/Rethink Celebration at Stamelos Gallery, Dearborn

Join us for an evening of celebration and reflection at the “Respond/Resist/Rethink Celebration.” Engage with the works of student artists across all three campuses as they explore what can be done to create more just and equitable futures in the 21st Century and beyond.

Stamps Gallery welcomes the Union of Feminists Against the System (UNFAS), led by Stamps Assistant Professor Emilia Yang, Guatemalan Curator Maya Juracan, and Central American feminist artists, for a performance, reading, and info session about how you can get involved. This event is part of Professor Yang’s Transnational Feminist Portals Multi-Year project and the Arts & Resistance Theme Semester and is co-sponsored by the Arts Initiative, Arts & Resistance, LSA, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRGW), and the Stamps School of Art & Design.
